We fail only when we quit!

January 18th, 2010

EDISON FAILED 10,000 TIMES BEFORE PERFECTING THE INCANDESCENT ELECTRIC LIGHTBULB. DON’T WORRY IF YOU FAIL ONCE.

Many of us give up if we fail once!  We HAVE to remind ourselves this is really normal.  We are going to fail at things over and over again until we find a way to WIN!  What have you failed at in the past?  Did you quit?  Did you keep going?

I studied for the CPA exam for 5 months and failed it.  I took it again and failed it again.  I was devastated.  I was more devastated that people saw me as a failure than I was at failing the exam.  Well, I took the exam again and guess what…..failed it again.  I really had a tough decision to make here should I take it again and possibly fail it again or should I take it over and over again until I passed?  Well, it was a very strong goal of mine to pass the CPA exam and so I decided that I was going to sit for the exam a 100 more times until I passed it.  The fourth time I took the exam I passed 3/4 of it which meant that I only had to take that last 1/4 the next time.  So the fifth time, I took the last part of the exam I didn’t pass yet and guess what happened?  Yes, I passed it!  I passed it because I tied my passion, decision and persistence to my goal.  I won!!!  Now everytime I want to achieve a goal, I look back to my success equation and replicate it until I win again!

Look into your past and see what the circumstances were when you won!  Replicate these circumstances so you can win over and over again!

BE UNSTOPPABLE!

What do I want to be when I grow up?

How many people do you hear saying this?  It is said as a joke but there is a lot of reality to it.  Many people have just not found what their passion is yet.  I have coached people that are in their 40’s that say this.  My daughter found early on that she wanted to work with animals and there are others that never find it.  How sad.  There is an easy way to find it though.  Do you want to know?  Make a list.

kids surfingStart making a list of everything you have ever LOVED to do in your life.  Really it is that easy!  Go back as far as you remember.  I remember I love to make bird nests in the mud.  Build your list to be 2 – 3 pages.  Next, read your list again and pick out the items that stick out to you and put them on a separate page.  You will find that these items will take a life of their own and weave themselves into something big!  One of my clients took a month to do this exercise.  She laughed when she found her passion as she said she knew it all along.  Interesting!
